World Disability Day observed across State

JAMMU, Dec 3: The ‘World Disability Day’ was observed across the State by organizing various activities, awareness camps and functions by Social Welfare Department, educational institutions, NGOs and other organizations.
Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with Lakshya (an NGO) observed International Day of People with Disability in the premises of Government Residential School for Blinds, Roop Nagar, Jammu. Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, was the chief guest, Director Social Welfare, Jammu, Dr Bharat Bhushan was the guest of honour and Deputy Director, Social Welfare Jammu, Supriya Kohli, was the special guest.
The Director Social Welfare, in his address, assured the specially abled people of the commitment of the Department for their welfare. He also apprised them regarding passing of three important legislations pertaining to specially abled people this year.
On the eve of International Disability Day, Jammu and Kashmir Disabled Welfare Association held their one day convention at Akhnoor. Former Minister and Congress leader, Sham Lal Sharma was the chief guest. Hundreds of disabled people from all over Akhnoor and nearby areas attended the convention.
Chairman of the Association, Sushil Sharma, while speaking on the occasion, expressed their serious resentment against previous Government for not giving due attention to their genuine demands like pension to all disabled persons, timely disbursement of disabled pension, clearing up of all the pending cases of pension of disabled persons, enhancement pension from Rs 400 to Rs 5000 per month for persons with 40% and above disability, etc.
While addressing the gathering, Sham Lal Sharma said that all their issues are genuine and will be taken up with the higher authorities.
District Legal Services Authority, Reasi observed “Disability Day” under the chairmanship of Kamlesh Pandit, Chairman, District Legal Services Authority (Principal District and Sessions Judge) in Government Higher Secondary School for Boys, Reasi. On the occasion, a legal awareness camp was held in which students of Legal Literacy Club of the school, besides other students participated.
Kamlesh Pandit threw light on the subject and on the importance of observing the “Disability Day” in detail. Anjum Ara (Sub-Judge), Secretary, District Legal Services Authority Reasi, Shalinder Bhardwaj, Retainer Lawyer and Gulshan Kumar, District Social Welfare Officer Reasi, also spoke on the occasion.
District Legal Services Authority, Udhampur under the supervision of its Chairman Sanjay Parihar, today organized an awareness-cum-distribution camp in collaboration with District Social Welfare Office to promote an understanding of disability issues to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Secretary (Sub-Judge), District Legal Service Authority, Sandeep Kour, apprised the public about their legal rights. During the camp, wheel chairs, walking sticks and hearing aids were given to identified beneficiaries.
Chief Education Office Leh in collaboration with PAGIR, REWA and MUNSEL (all NGOs) observed “World Disability Day” at Chushot High School today. Padma Shri Dr Tsering Landol was chief guest while Chief Education Officer (CEO) Konchok Angmo was special guest on the occasion. After deliberate upon various issues of disabled persons, a special committee was formed to address the various issues of disabled person.
Similarly, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Leh observed the Day at PAGIR office complex under the chairmanship of District and Session Judge RS Jasrotia. Highlighting the legal rights and Government schemes for disabled person, the DLSA Chairman, DLSA Secretary Spalzes Angmo, Incharge CJM Phuntsog Angmo and Bar Association president Mohd Shafi Lassu addressed the gathering.
A function in connection with World Disability Day was organized at University of Jammu. Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Sanjeev Verma, was the chief guest while the function was presided over by Manoj Dhar, Vice Chancellor of the University. MLC Ajay Bharti and Commissioner Secretary, Social Welfare, Farooq Ahmad Lone were also present.
On the eve of World Disability Day, the Department of Students Welfare (DSW), University of Kashmir (KU) organized a general interaction meet with the specially abled students of the University. Around 50 students from different Post Graduate Departments as well as some research scholars participated in the interaction during which they raised different issues related to teaching/ curricular/co-curricular/ research/hostel facilities and scholarships and sought immediate resolution of their grievances.
To make students aware of the rights and well-being of disabled persons in all spheres of society, Delhi Public School (DPS), Jammu celebrated World Disability Day in the school premises. The students showcased their keen interest and enthusiasm in all activities that were organized on the occasion.
The students of Pre-Primary wing were involved in role play to help them understand how empathy is more important than sympathy for physically challenged persons. The students of Primary wing composed innovative slogans and quotes on the theme “Empowering Persons with Disabilities”. An Essay Writing Competition was also organized for senior wing students.
To observe International Day of Persons with Disabilities, DPS Nagbani today invited disabled persons in its premises and the students of the school spent some time with them. The students of DPS Nagbani welcomed the special invitees for the day.
They met with the persons with disabilities and listened to their experiences of life. They spent some time with them by sharing their views and learning from them how they cope up with their disability. In the end, gifts were presented by the school management to all the invitees.
To express solidarity with physically challenged persons, New India Assurance Company Limited (NIACL) in collaboration with Jammu chapter of Indian Red Cross Society, organized blood donation camp at Blood Bank Department of Government Medical College & Hospital, Jammu.
About 25 persons donated blood on this occasion of World Disability Day, which was chaired by Dr Daleep Pandita, Senior Divisional Manager of NIACL, who himself is a master blood donor. K K Verma, president, Red Cross Society, Jammu, Rajender Bhat, Senior Branch Manager of NIACL and Anil Gupta, a centurion blood donor, were also present in this camp.
The Day was also observed by J&K Intellectual Civil Society, New Delhi under the chairmanship of its chairman, SS Sodhi.
Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS) organized a function in connection with World Disability Day at the Department of Information and Visual Publicity auditorium in Srinagar, where the specially-abled children today enthralled the audience comprising of their parents with a variety of cultural programmes.
A function to observe World Disability Day was also organized at GHSS Kothibagh in Srinagar. The function was presided over by Secretary, Social Welfare, Farooq Ahmad Lone. Similar functions were organized at Composite Regional Centre Bemina, Bandipora, Anantnag, Budgam, Baramulla and Shopian.
