JAMMU, Dec 6: The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) has today said that Congress needs no lesson on its commitment to democracy from any one and better they follow the path to weaken the anti-democratic, divisive and communal forces in the State.
In a statement here today, PCC chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said that no one should issue certificates on democracy to the Congress party which has a history of over 132 years for establishing and strengthening democracy in the country and has never indulged in its commitments to democracy on political convenience.
Surprisingly, those who boycotted the ongoing electoral exercise for PRIs in the State under challenging circumstances as well as stayed away from the Lok Sabha elections held in 1996 under more challenging situations to the democracy and the nation, are questioning the Congress party, he quipped. Better they do not reopen the chapters of 1953 and 1983 & 1987 and the circumstances leading to that situations and thereafter.
“Let it be known that Congress-NC coalition came under great strain, at the point of time, when Congress struggled and pressed for incorporation of good provisions 73rd and 74th amendments in the State laws but Congress preferred its commitments to empower Panchayat Raj and strengthen democracy in the state. Finally, it succeeded in its mission in March 2014. Let no one questioned our commitment to democracy out of contest, at least those who shared our experience in the recent past,” the chief spokesman said.
On the question of pre-poll alliance, he said that no relationship was ever forced unilaterally and such comments are uncalled for. The Congress is fully geared up to contest all seats in the state on its own, as it has a strong base in all three regions of the state and would emerge single largest party in the next elections.
