NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said here on Friday that journalism-being the fourth pillar of Democracy, needs to be more responsible, positive and act as a social reformer. Addressing the 51st Covocation of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) here, Ms Mahajan advised the future journalists to take responsibility of their actions and use journalism as a tool for social reformation.
“News is meant to create awareness in order to create a better society, but nowadays it is sensationalised at times. The good points are often not shown and negative remarks are highlighted,” she said adding that news publications should also feature a page which emphasises on ”the good around us.”
Citing an example from the Parliament sessions, she said, “People may think that the Parliamentarians are always fighting, but that is not the case. They are just shown that way by some media outlets. This is why there is a need to talk about the good side of the proceedings as well, where people listen to each other and draw a common conclusion.” (AGENCIES)
