Verma Committee Recommendations

Sir,
The recommendations submitted by JS Verma committee on the safety of women are worth considering. The recommendations of the committee are exhaustive and have almost touched all the aspects relating to safety of women from sexual assault. By not recommending the death penalty for rapists, it has also given an impression that the recommendations have been submitted after giving a deep thought. At a time when the world opinion is picking momentum against death penalty, there is no justification in adding more offences in the capital punishment category.
The need was to award stringent punishment to culprits according to the grade of the offence which has been done in this report. This will definitely work as deterrent for such crimes. Further the definition of rape has been widened to ensure more security to women. The punishment proposed for police officials not registering the FIR shall go in a long way for speedy justice and shall also create confidence of the victims in law enforcing agencies. Further the disqualification of politicians as MLA’s and MP’s on taking the cognizance of crime by the court instead of conviction shall also have a cleansing effect in the politics. But due to the stringent punishment proposed the law can be misutilised for settling scores and giving bad name to our forces, there should also have been some harsh punishment for fake reporting.
Yours etc……
