JAMMU, Dec 13: A day-long workshop for devising modules for capacity building of Panches and Sarpanches was held at NIRD, Hyderabad under the chairpersonship of Director General, NIRD, Dr WR Reddy.
The Jammu and Kashmir was represented by Secretary, Department of Rural Development, Sheetal Nanda. Director Panchayats and Shafia from IMPA were also present on the occasion along with faculty of NIRD.
The Secretary RD&PR told that the State intends to equip the panches and sarpanches through these trainings aimed at making them familiar with the changes in the PR Act, participative planning, budgeting and accounting practices, social audit, PRI-SHG convergence etc.
In this connection, the Department of RD & PR, J&K in collaboration with NIRD & IMPA will organize 4-5 days capacity building sessions for panches and sarpanches over a period of 2-3 months to sensitize the elected representatives about their roles and responsibilities.
It is pertinent to mention that the Panchayat Elections in J&K concluded on December 11, 2018 and a slew of major decisions have been taken to empower the panches and sarpanches. Nanda said that this is also a step in the direction and shall go a long way in empowering the panchayats.
