Protest against rise in thefts, road blocked for 4 hrs

RAJOURI, Dec 13: The people from Jawahar Nagar and adjoining areas in the town here held strong protest demonstration against local police for failure to keep check on the increasing theft cases in the area and disrupted movement of traffic for about four hours.
Reports said that first theft took place in the house of young girl Gurmeet Kour during broad day light in Jawahar Nagar. Her parents have expired and she and her minor brother had gone at work. She teaches in a nearby private school and her marriage was going to be held after one month. The thieves broke opened their lock and decamped with Rs 4 lakh cash and nearly 10 tola gold from her house.
Not only this, the thieves also committed two more thefts in the houses of Agriculture employee R K Raina and one Sunil Kumar businessman in the nearby area during broad day light. When the girl came home at around 2 pm, she found that her cash and gold had been stolen. She raised alarm and many people gathered there. The people also came to know about two more thefts.
Then the people from entire area including men, women and children came out on main Jawahar Nagar Road at around 2.30 pm and stopped movement on Rajouri-Kandi-Budhal Road. They started protest against police and district administration. They raised slogans against SSP, DC and SHO. They alleged that it was fifth theft in the town in just last four days. The police has failed to solve any case. They also demanded compensation for the poor girl whose parents have already expired and was earning livelihood by taking tuitions and teaching in a small private school.
Later, Addl DC Rajouri Sher Singh and Addl SP Mohd Liaqat arrived the spot and after long discussion with the agitating people they managed to lift dharna and suspend agitation. They assured the public to solve the theft cases as early as possible. The traffic on the road was then restored at around 7 pm.
