KATHUA, Jan 1: The district headquarters, Kathua has been virtually turned into a city of stray animals.
Scores of stray animals including cows, bulls and the dogs are often seen moving here and there without any fear in various localities. Even the cows keep sitting on the roads and lanes causing inconvenience to the vehicle operators and general public. These animals are also responsible for undue road accidents. Even these animals are posing loss to the property of shop keepers, vegetable/ fruit vendors, farmers and also cause injuries, some times to the people moving on the way. The administration has yet to take cognizance of this menace in the city.
The worried residents of Sawan Chack under ward No. 14 Kathua ultimately were forced to assemble some animals at an abandoned Govt school and put them under lock there. The people told that they informed the Municipal Council many times but did not get any positive response from there. They alleged that the animals belong to some local people. They milk their cows and then abandon on the roads and lanes.
A local Manjit Singh said these animals damaged their standing wheat crop and vegetables during the night hours . He said we are helpless to find out the solution of this problem. A woman Satwant Kour said that school going children are under the terror of these animals. Many a times our children and elder person got injured due to attack by these animals.
The Municipal Council Kathua, president Naresh Sharma said we know the serious problem of Kathua city but the Council has not additional funds to meet the expenses on stray animals by keeping them in cow shelters. He said other states has provision of special funding for stray animals. But in J&K is nothing given for that. He claimed that KMC would hold meeting with Deputy Commissioner in this connection.
