NEW DELHI: Warning that the Upper House had only a few days to go before the end of the winter session, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu upset over constant ruckus in the Rajya Sabha, on Thursday appealed to MPs to let the House function for the last three working days.
Rising to his feet at the start of the day’s proceedings a day after several AIADMK MPs were suspended from the RS, Mr Naidu told the MPs ”don’t blame me if you don’t perform”.
The Chairman said it was not his duty to ”point fingers at any party for disrupting House”, as he requested everyone to ensure at least those Bills were passed ”over which members have a broad consensus”. He mentioned statutory resolutions and important Bills awaiting passage in the House.
Stating that people were saying he was silent over the prevailing noisy scenes in the House, Mr Naidu said he had reached out to the RS MPs both individually and through meetings to allow the RS to function.
On allegations levelled that the ruckus was aimed at stalling discussion in the Upper House, he queried ”Plan by whom? The Chairman keeps pleading for it to be allowed to function.”
He also referred to his absence from the proceedings over the past few days, saying it was due to his mother-in-law’s health he had been forced to go home mid-session.
Drawing attention to the ”people’s agony” at the non-functional House during this session, he urged that Members permit arguments and counter arguments so that it could proceed.
