Mandi gets National award for women participation in MGNREGA

SHIMLA, Feb 2:
Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh was conferred with National award by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi at New Delhi today for women participation in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act while Gram Panchayat of Dharaich was awarded for remaining at sixth position on the national level for best implementation of this national flagship programme.
Ms Gandhi in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh gave away citation to Divash Kumar Deputy Commissioner Mandi for playing an important role to increase participation of women in MGNREGA, an official statement here said.
Gram Panchayat Pradhan of Dharaich Vijay Singh was also given citation by the UPA chairperson for remaining at sixth place on the national level for best implementation of scheme after fulfilling all the parameter prescribed by the Union Government in MGNREGA.
Mandi and Solan district’s name were proposed by the state for remaining on the top in terms of women participation in MGNREGA as Kullu and Shimla districts also performed best in category.
MGNREGA was running in all 12 districts in the state since 2006-07 and it has transformed rural economy after providing employment avenue in the villages besides empowering women after increasing their purchasing power who had negligible role in financial control of household before the scheme.
Greeting the recipients on getting the award Ms Gandhi said, “MGNREGA has become world’s number one welfare scheme as it has helped the people in rural areas to generate employment besides, it will now thrust upon to create community assets for the benefit of people in the rural areas,” the statement added.
