‘Wealth from Waste’ initiative launched at Kissan Ghar Narwal

JAMMU, Jan 12: Directorate of Rural Sanitation, J&K, launched “Wealth From Waste” as part of “Solid Resource Management” initiative at Kissan Ghar, Fruit and Vegetable Market, Narwal, Jammu.
This is a first of its kind initiative which not only aims to manage the waste but also to recycle it as a resource which can be marketed for income generation. The Project was implemented by Director Rural Sanitation, J&K, Indu Kanwal Chib, along with Block Development Officer Bishnah, Akhnoor and Zila Swachh Bharat Preraks from TATA Trusts.
Wealth from waste is a programme in which, to begin with the waste cloth was recycled into 800 cloth bags to be circulated in Fruit and Vegetable Market Narwal, to replace plastic bags with an aim to eliminate plastic bag waste generation at source. This program led on the ground by Sarpanch Panchayat Seohra (Bishnah), Sarpanch Panchayat Bardhakalan (Akhnoor), women from the local community and UMEED Self Help Group in these areas who were trained free of cost to produce cloth bags by G K Educational Trust who became training partners with the Directorate of Rural Sanitation, J&K in this initiative.
Director Horticulture Panning & Marketing, Syed Shahnawaz Ahmad Bukhari became the first buyer of this consignment of 700 cloth bags and handed over a cheque of Rs 20000 to Sarpanch Seohra and other panchs. The function was attended by Mission Director SRLM, Abdul Rashid War, Waste expert from State Pollution Control Board, Anuradha, District Panchayat Officers, Rajni, BDO Bishnah, Zila Swachh Bharat Preraks and most importantly by women from Self Help Groups.
Along with resource persons from G K Educational Trust, this programme shall also be formulated with SHG women in Udhampur and Samba to spread this concept across the State.
