JAMMU, Jan 20: All India Jat Maha Sabha organised a Maha Sammelan, here today, under the leadership of Choudhary Manmohan Singh, president of AIJMS (J&K).
Yudhvir Singh, general secretary of AIJMS; Rakesh Tekait, president of Bhartiya Kissan Union and Ch Dharamvir Singh, Secy AIJMS, were guests of honour on the occasion.
Threadbare discussions were held regarding unresolved issues of the Jat community, particularly those residing in border areas. They demanded one-time settlement as compensation of minimum Rs 30 lakh out of which only Rs 5.50 lakh have been released in favour of about 60 percent displaced families of 1947, 1965 and 1971. Remaining families are left with no aid by the Government as they are facing difficulties in completing their documents due to non co – operation of Revenue Department, they added.
They also demanded transfer of ownership rights of land to the displaced families, compensation of Rs 10 lakh and Government job to next of kin of the deceased in border firing, RBA category to the people living within 8 kms of border area, OBC status to Jats, 5 marla plots at safer places to border area residents, special recruitment drives for the border youth and shifting of border fencing at zero point.
Addressing the gathering, Ch Manmohan Singh assured the Jat community that he would take up all their issues with Governor J&K Satya Pal Malik very soon. He stressed that the Jat community must acknowledge its achievements, hard work and efforts as this will serve as an encouragement to other members of the Biradri. He further said that a single step forward is a step towards harmonious progress and development of the Biradari.
In his address, Rakesh Tekait asked the community members to launch a State level agitation to get their genuine demands fulfilled under the leadership of Ch Manmohan Singh. Extending his support to the cause of Jats in J&K, Tekait said that he would dispatch his supporting brigade at the time of agitation.
Ch Yudhvir Singh said that unity was the strength of Jats. “If we turn up like this in support of our causes, than there is nothing we can’t achieve,” he said
Jat community members from Poonch, Kathua, Samba, Mendhar, Noweshera, Rajouri and Baramulla Kashmir etc took part in the Sammelan.
