JAMMU, Jan 27: Urging Governor Satya Pal Malik to reconsider order of reversing decision of previous Government of exempting Stamp duty on registration of land anywhere in the name of women, former Minister and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Spokesperson Priya Sethi today said this was done with sole aim of giving women a defence against violence and inculcating sense of security amongst them.
She said the decision was historic and appreciated all over the state as women who were having no property in their name always felt insecure. It was after this decision that large number of people in order to save Stamp duty preferred to get registration of properties done in the name of women. This way they empowered women and provided them a sense of security.
Urging Governor to reverse the decision of finance department, Priya Sethi said there can also be a move to relax percentage of Stamp duty for women while keeping the same for men as has been decided by Governor’s administration so that some benefit can be extended to women folk.
“Women in the state were own very properties and their holdings in small towns were almost negligible or very less. There are several enterprising women who want to set up their own units, becomes self reliant and then buy residential properties but such a decision can jeopardise their efforts and discourage them”, Priya Sethi said.
The females had benefited by this decision and by feeling safe and secure as people had started registration of land in the name of female members of the families to save Stamp duty, she added saying that a second thought must be given to this decision so that policies aimed at empowering women could be reviewed as well as strengthened.
Best example to empower women was startred in the State of Gujarat which is said as Navi Gaurav Niti 2006 by then Ex Chief Minister and present Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, she stated.
