Udhampur is the second largest city of Jammu region. Situated along the National Highway, it enjoys crucial strategic location even in terms of trade and commerce also. It is entrepot to vast trans and cis-Pir Panchal regions of the Himalayas. Like any other town in the State, it has grown rapidly during recent years but unfortunately its expansion has been haphazard and unplanned creating many bottlenecks for the local administrative services to perform well. Tech Mech International, the Ahmadabad based consultants, have submitted the Concept Report of Udhampur Master Plan to the State Government for further action. This is a project of town planning taking into account the growth of the town in next 30 years. Raising new townships in the proximity of existing old towns should have been taken up decades ago and by now new towns would have come up in the State with modern architecture, layout, sanitary pre-requisites and social services. But it is never too late to mend. We are hopeful that the Master Plan for Udhampur will become catalyst to a new and modern life-pattern of people in this commercial town which is now linked with railway and soon with six-lane high way that would enhance it commercial capability manifold. We do not know whether the Government will approve in entirety the draft Concept Plan as prepared by the technical expert team but we need to advise the government that new townships, wherever these are conceptualized, have to be in conformity with modern concept of a new residential colony with all amenities and requirements at hand. Towns are not laid often and it is important to keep in mind the scope of further extension of the laid out and well planned township. We need to have the futuristic view of our State and its needs.
