Abolish all caste, class based reservations: GCPF

JAMMU, Feb 5: General Category People’s Forum (GCPF), Jammu today demanded that the steps be taken towards the creation of casteless and classless society and the provision of ‘Equal rights and equal laws for all’ be made by total abolition of caste and class based reservations.
Describing the decision of Modi Government to provide 10% reservation to economically weaker sections (EWS) a step in right direction to undone injustice done to General category people, chairman of the Forum, RK Banathia said in a meeting of the Forum held here today that since independence of the country political class of India had been promoting casteism and communalism through reservation and divisible politics for political gains.
Prof Yash Paul Sharma, president of the Forum demanded that all tax-payers be considered as creamy layer and be debarred from the benefits of reservation. He said as caste and class based reservations negate the fundamental principles of equality, justice and liberty, these should eb abolished totally.
Som Nath Sharma, general secretary, demanded that special privileges that SC, ST, OBC and tribals get, be provided to EWS of General category people and all types of reservation be provided to the people on economic basis as poverty is the biggest factor of all kinds of backwardness. “Such a move will bring equality among all sections of the society,” he said and warned political parties against the exploitation of people on castes and religion. He demanded abolition of political reservations under article 330 and 332.
The participants which included Bhushan Pargal, Dr Bansi Lai, Ravi Sahni, Gopal Ram Verma, Tulsi Dass, Jagdish Kumar, VK Sharma and Deepak Khajuria demanded delimitation of assembly constituencies based on the criteria laid down by the People’s Representation Act.
