Mixed response to creation of separate Division for Ladakh

JAMMU, Feb 8: Various political parties while welcoming the grant of Divisional status to Ladakh have demanded the same status for Pir Panjal and Chenab regions of Jammu Division which they allege are facing constant discrimination.

PDP president and former Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti while welcoming the creation of Ladakh as a separate division however said that ignoring of regions like Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal raise doubts about New Delhi’s intensions.
In a statement here, today Mehbooba said it seems that Governor, Satya Pal Malik is peddling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) agenda by ignoring other deserving regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
In another statement, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while welcoming the decision of granting the Divisional Status to Ladakh region expressed displeasure against Government’s decision to isolate Pir Panjal andChenab regions. PDP chief spokesman, Rafi Ahmad Mir said that decision of granting Division status to Ladakh is welcome but the discrimination with Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley can’t be brushed aside.
PDP general secretary and MLC Surinder Choudhary also said that his party welcomes the Government decision of granting divisional status to Ladakh but strongly advocated for grant of the same status to Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley which he said has been a long pending demand of the party.
BJP MLC from Ladakh, Chering Dorjay has welcomed the decision regarding grant of Divisional status to Ladakh region. In a statement issued here, today he said the people of Ladakh are overwhelmed on carving out a separate administrative and Revenue Division for Ladakh.
He said this would go a long way to remove the discrimination with which people of this region were all along subjected to by the successive political governments of the State. The region which is geographically isolated with inhospitable terrain, which remained landlocked for more than six months in a year, was faced with many hardships and tremendous problems in conducting the administrative affairs.
He said Prime Minster, Narendra Modi has taken a historic decision to create a separate Administrative Division for Ladakh and help the people of this backward and remote region to bring effective local institutional arrangements which would help and accelerate the pace of development and provide equitable financial infusion to give fillip to the economy of the region.
He also complimented Union Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh saying that without his positive support the grant of Divisional status to this remote region was not possible.
PDP senior leader and former Minister, Naeem Akhtar while welcoming the decision said that keeping the Headquarter of Ladakh Division permanently at Leh is discriminatory to the larger district of the area Kargil.
Chairman PDF Hakeem Yaseen has also welcomed the decision to make Ladakh region of the State as a separate administrative division. He urged the Governor, S P Malik to also fulfill the long pending demand of the people of Chenab Valley and Peer Panjal in Jammu Division and Kamraz and Maraz area in Kashmir Valley and make them separate administrative divisions.
CPI (M) leader and ex MLA Kulgam, Mohammed Yousf Tarigami while welcoming the decision said the demand of the people of Ladakh region for creation of a separate administrative / Revenue division was a legitimate concern of people of the region. Besides, there are several legitimate regional and sub regional concerns and demands in the State which is rich of diversities and its unity is important. He said fulfilling the democratic aspirations of the people of different regions and sub regions and decentralization and democratization of governance is the foundation for the unity of our people.
