Roy calls for Kashmir boycott, draws flak

SHILLONG, Feb 19: Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy today supported a call for a boycott of “everything Kashmiri”, including the Amarnath Yatra and purchasing products from the State.
Roy, who describes himself as a right-wing Hindu socio-political thinker, writer, ideologue on Twitter, went on the microblogging site to air his views.
“An appeal from a retired Colonel of the Indian Army: Don’t visit Kashmir, don’t go to Amarnath for the next 2 years. Don’t buy articles from Kashmir emporia or Kashmiri tradesman who come every winter. Boycott everything Kashmiri. I am inclined to agree,” he tweeted.
Meanwhile, lashing out at the Meghalaya Governor for supporting an appeal to boycott Kashmiri goods, National Conference (NC) vice-president Omar Abdullah said that people like Tathagata Roy wants “Kashmir without Kashmiris.”
“These are the bigots driving Kashmir over the abyss. While you are at it Tathagata why don’t you stop using our rivers to generate your electricity as well, “Abdullah, who is the former Chief Minister of the State, wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
“People like Tathagata want Kashmir but without Kashmiris. They’d sooner see us driven in to the sea. He’ll be best placed to know he can’t have one without the other so what’s it to be,” he added.
Hitting out at Tathagata Roy for supporting an appeal to boycott Kashmiris and Kashmiri goods, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today said the Centre should sack him immediately.
Mehbooba, who was the Chief Minister in previous PDP-BJP Government, said if the centre fails to do so, it means he has their tacit approval and are using it as an election poly to polarise the situation. (Agencies)
