Fresh snowfall on upper reaches, rain in plains in Kashmir

SRINAGAR :  World famous ski resort of Gulmarg and base camp of Holy Amarnath cave shrine besides other heights in the Kashmir valley received fresh snowfall while plains, including the summer capital, Srinagar had rains.
A Met department spokesman said there could be rain or snow in the Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours. There would be not much change in the weather, he added.
People in the Ladakh region continued to shiver as the minimum temperature remained between minus 9 degree to minus 20 degree while Gulmarg was coldest in the Kashmir valley after the minimum settled at minus 7 degree, four notches colder than yesterday.
About half a feet of fresh snowfall was experienced on the slopes, a hotel owner told over phone from Gulmarg.
He said the upper heights, including Kongdori, Khilanmarg and Affarwat received moderate to heavy snowfall.
It was cloudy today, he said adding a large number of skiers and other adventure lovers are out on the slopes since this morning. Against yesterday’s minus 4.3 degree minimum temperature, it was minus 7, Met spokesman said.
Pahalgam, base camp of Holy Amarnath cave shrine, also received fresh snowfall. Tree and roof tops had turned white last night.
Against yesterday’s 0.5 degree, it was minus 1.1 degree, Met spokesman said.
However, upper reaches, including Cave shrine and its periphery, Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top, Panjterni and Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station on tradition yatra route, received moderate to heavy snowfall during the past 24 hours.
The upper reaches in north Kashmir, including Keran, Karnah, Machil, Teetwal, Neeru and Dawar besides villages near the Line of Control (LoC), which remained cut off from their respective district headquarters since December last year, also received fresh snowfall.
Plains, including Srinagar and its outskirts, received rains and the sky remained heavily cloudy.
Srinagarrecorded 3.1 degree minimum temperature against yesterday’s 2.7 degree, Kargil recorded minus 10.2 degree against yesterday’s minus 9 degree.
However, there was about six degree improvement in Leh where the minimum temperature was minus 6.2 degree against yesterday’s minus 10 degree.
However, in the upper heights, including near the Line of Control (LoC), where security forces remained guard to foil any infiltration attempt from across the border, besides at Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, the minimum was between minus 9 degree to minus 20 degree.
