Rail service resumes after 9-day-long strike

SRINAGAR : Railway services from south to north Kashmir via Srinagar resumed today after remaining suspended for nine days following a strike called by separatist organisations after Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was hanged in Delhi’s Tihar jail on February 9.
“Yes, we are starting the rail services from this afternoon,” a railway official told UNI here.
He said the morning services from Qazigund to Baramulla via Srinagar was suspended on that day. They were waiting for the security clearance, Now a green signal has been received and
they were starting the service from this afternoon.
He said the service were suspended on February 9 for security reasons due to curfew restrictions imposed in the Valley as the authorities apprehended violence following the execution of Afzal.
There was security concern to suspend the rail services, they said, adding rail property worth crores had been damaged during the 2010 summer violence.
However, air service remained unaffected by the curfew restrictions as air tickets were being treated as curfew passes.
The Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained through for one-way traffic.
