DUBAI, Apr 13: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is cooperating with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in science and technology sectors related to the International Space Station (ISS), Salem Al Marri, the head of the UAE Astronaut Program, told Sputnik.
“The UAE, represented by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), has agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to cooperate on science and outreach activities. The UAE has also signed an agreement with NASA through the UAE Space Agency that outlines cooperation across a range of areas related to space exploration and human spaceflight. We are working with both entities on science and technology areas related to ISS,” Al Marri, who is also the assistant director general for Scientific and Technical Affairs at MBRSC, said.
MBRSC said on Friday it had chosen Hazzaa Al Mansoori to be the UAE’s first astronaut to fly to the ISS on board the Russian Soyuz MS-15 spacecraft. Sultan Al Neyadi will be the backup astronaut for the ISS mission.
