SRINAGAR, Feb 18: Over 42, 000 books are either missing from libraries in Kashmir province or are lying with borrowers including bureaucrats and politicians, reveals the official documents of Department of Libraries, Kashmir.
As per official documents there are around 4 lakh books available in 69 public libraries in Kashmir province out of which 22,363 are with borrowers and 20286 are missing. The documents reveal that 2659 books are with bureaucrats who have failed to return the same.
The documents say that these borrowers are registered with the public libraries and Gazetted Officers have attested their forms.
The library officials said that the department has sent many reminders to these borrowers many a times, but there was no response from defaulters.
They also said that the lack of any stringent law is the reason that the borrowers behave like irresponsible persons and are not returning the books even after a time gap of many years.
The books are missing from almost all the libraries, including at district headquarters of the Valley.
