Sir,
Refer news item ‘Voter ID more powerful than IED’ DE Apr 24, 2009.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has rightly said that the Voter ID is more powerful than the IED of terrorists.
Though various campaign have been launched by the Election Commission of India to make people aware of their voting rights, yet there is a big chunk of voters who do not take part in election process. In India the urban voter even being educated does not take part in the process whole-heartedly. He likes to remain confined to four walls enjoying a break from the hustle bustle of city life. He finds the holiday a God-sent gift and would not let it go waste. In comparison to urban voter, a rural voter remains much enthusiastic about the democratic process. It has been observed that these voters take a break from their work to cast a vote. Even domestic helps working in urban cetres desh off to their respective village to utilise their votes. In case voting process is made compulsory, a new power equation may emerge in the country.
There is also need to ease the election process to make it more transparent and fair. Once that happens voters turn out may increase.
