Governor for Yoga to promote peace

JAMMU, Feb 21: Emphasizing the significance of Yoga in bringing about harmony and heralding peace in the society, Governor N N Vohra today called for enlarging awareness about the same to make the world a better place to live in.
“There is a need for encouraging all initiative and approach, which can possibly reduce conflicts and tensions for promoting peace and harmony while Yoga can play a significant role in this direction”, he said while inaugurating three-day World Yoga Conference on `Global Peace and Harmony Through Holistic Approach of Yoga and Meditation’ at Jammu University here today.
The conference is being organized by the Yoga Centre of Jammu University. Around 300 delegates from different countries, including USA, Iran, Mexico, Thailand and Myanmar are participating in the conference.
“All possible measures should be taken to promote Yoga in our State and the country as it inculcates discipline and is a valuable alternative medicine for the effective management of varied physical ailments as well as neurological disorders,” Mr Vohra said.
Maintaining that only a peaceful mind can think on positive lines, the Governor said that the Yoga as a way of life will not only bestow peace on human being but also sharpen their mental faculties which can help in overcoming the strains of life.
Vice-Chancellor of JU, Prof M P S Ishar, who presided over the inaugural function, said that the regular practice of Yoga helps in spreading peace not only within ourselves but to the surrounding as well. He hoped that the conference would provide the participants a useful platform to share their knowledge and thoughts on Yoga.
Earlier, Dr D L Choudhary, Director of the JU Yoga Centre, gave details of the function while Padamshree Bharat Bhushan, in his key note address, dwelt on the aims and objectives of the conference. S K Jain, patron of Bhartiya Yog Sansthan Jammu, presented vote of thanks.
The Minister for Finance A R Rather, Prof Swatantra Kumar (vice-Chancellor of Gurukul Kangri University Haridwar), Lee Halina Majewski (Yoga scholar from Canada) Prof Ved Kumari Ghai, ADG Police K Rajindra, senior officers, Deans, Heads of Department, Faculty members and students of JU besides delegates of the conference were present on the occasion.
The inaugural session was followed by paper presentation by the delegates and then a cultural programme in the evening.
