UDHAMPUR, May 7: Raising the question in delaying J&K Assembly polls, former MLA and NPP President Balwant Singh Mankotia said that if Municipality elections, Panchayati elections and now Lok Sabha elections were conducted successfully in the State then why there is delay in conducting Assembly polls.
While addressing a press conference here today, Mankotia said that State is under President Rule from almost 6 months and it is for the first time after 90’s J&K remained without elected Government for such long period. To maintain democratic setup in the State, it is necessary to hold assembly elections soon, he added.
He said that ECI is independent authority and if it works under some political pressure then its serious threat on democracy. He informed that few months back, a delegation including 3 observers also visits the State to know about the ground situation for holding Assembly polls and all political parties favoured in one voice to hold Assembly elections in the State. Despite receiving positive response from all political parties, ECI failed to take necessary steps to hold assembly elections in the State, he stated.
Mankotia appealed to ECI to hold assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir earlier so that people of the State can elect their own Government and easily approach their elected representative for their daily routine problems.
Sarpanch Shiv Dev Singh, Youth Leader Ganesh Dutt and Sohan Singh were also present during press conference.
