JAMMU, May 21: Chairman of newly framed regional party DSSP Kissan Cell KP Singh demanded compensation for the damaged mango crop in Jammu region.
He said that recent rains accompanied by strong winds and hailstorm have not only damaged the mango crop but has also ruined the livelihood of the farmers.
“At many places the damages are more than 75 per cent”, he said and expresses resentment against the Government particularly against the Department of Horticulture for not initiating action of assessment of the losses.
“Earlier in the month of March, more than 75 to 80 per cent orange and lemon crops were destroyed by rains and hailstorm for which no tears were shed by the entire administration. This has disheartened the farmers and orchard owners not because of loss of income but because of their shattered hopes. Farmers have lost faith in the current dispensation”, he stated.
He also criticized the administration for not paying any compensation to any farmers against the damage to ripe and harvested wheat crop due to various calamities like fire, heavy and untimely rains, hailstorms etc.
He appealed to the Governor to constitute a special team to take stock of the damages to the mango crop and compensate farmers accordingly.
