JAMMU, Feb 25: Former Minister and Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Gulchain Singh Charak has said that Government must fulfill the commitment made with the Numberdars and Chowkidars and they should be provided at least Rs 2500 honorarium per month as the amount being offered at present was too meager.
Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Charak, who is also president of  Dogra Saddar Sabha, extended gratitude to the State Government and especially the Revenue Minister for giving some hike in the remuneration of these village community members but regretted that it was not sufficient. He said the commitment made with the Numberdars and Chowkidars by the Government has not been honoured. They should be provided at least Rs 2500 per month as most of the Revenue related works in the villages are got done through these people and they are important organs of Panchayat Halqas and Patwars. They should also be provided concession in public transport.
Mr Charak further disclosed that  a delegation of these members will meet the Revenue Minister within and day or two and project their demands. He also extended gratitude to the former Revenue Minister for the enhancement of  the honorarium of  these members up to Rs 500. Mr Charak disclosed that a grand State level annual congregation of Numberdars and Chowkidars will be held at Dogra Saddar Sabha next month.
Referring to the killing of a Sarpanch in Baramulla area of Kashmir yesterday, Mr Charak said it was unfortunate that selective killings are taking place and hundreds of Sarpanchs and Panchs have given resignations. He said Congress has taken clear stand on the empowerment of Panchayats  and  if it is done the selective killings will also stop. Though it was not possible to provide security cover to as many as 36,000 elected Panchayat members yet when they will start public works with full powers, public itself will take care of them. He demanded that Panchayats should be given full powers without any more delay now.
