Jammu Mathematical Society conference begins at JU

JAMMU, Feb 26: 23rd annual conference of Jammu Mathematical Society and National Seminar on “Recent Trends in Analysis and Topology” began today in the Department of Mathematics, Jammu University.
Vice-Chancellor JU, Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar formally inaugurated the conference in presence of founder member of the Society Prof D K Gupta, eminent mathematician Prof S Ponnusamy of IIT Madras presently Director, ISI Chennai Centre, as the chief guest and Prof Indrajit Lahiri, University of Kalyani (WB) as the guest of honour.
While addressing the gathering, Prof Ishar shared his enthusiasm for mathematics and put across the point that use of mathematics in understanding allied science is indispensable.
This event is a three days academic activity with a large number of participants from various parts of the country. Some undergraduate and post-graduate students from various colleges and Universities of this region who stood 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in various mathematical competitions organized by the society during 2012 were given awards/certificates in recognition.
The programme started with a welcome address by the president of Jammu Mathematical Society Prof Jamwal, while Prof Ponnusamy and Prof Indrajit Lahiri threw light on various opportunities in Mathematics/Statistics for young students/scholars pursuing mathematics as their career.
The secretary of the society Dr K S Charak presented the annual report of the society and gave introduction about the national seminar as organizing secretary of the seminar. Prof Bhopinder Singh, Principal, GCET, presented a vote of thanks as vice president of the society.
