JAMMU, Feb 28: Various educational institutions celebrated National Science Day with enthusiasm and zeal.
Vice-Chancellor, Jammu University Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, said it is very important to popularize Science and its applications among young brains specially School and College Students.
He said this while inaugurating the National Science Day on the theme “Genetically Modified Crops and Food Security” organized for the first time in the University of Jammu.
Prof PK Gupta in his power point presentation stressed the need for increasing production of good grains to meet the growing demand.
Prof GM Bhat, Head, Department of Geology, Prof SK Khosa, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Manoj K Dhar, Controller of Examinations also spoke on the occasion.
Students from various schools of Jammu, Kathua and Udhampur participated in the Poster making Competition and in this category first prize was bagged by Ashu Lagotra, Govt High School, Qasim Nagar, whereas second and third prizes were bagged by Roopali Keshav, Govt High School, City Chowk and Arjun Singh, Govt High School, Qasim Nagar respectively. “The debate was also organised on the theme Genetically modified Crop and Food Security, in which first Prize was bagged by Shreya Raina and Sabiha Kantro from Govt College for Women, Parade whereas second and third prizes were bagged by Roshi sharma and Nawang Tundup from, Dept of Botany, University of Jammu and Harpeet Singh and Rinku Kumar from GGM Science College respectively.
Prof Rekha Chaudhary who was the chief guest in the valedictory function encouraged students to raise their voice to express their thoughts and ideas whereas Mr Pakhroo, Joint Director, School Education, was guest of honour.
Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College organized a lecture on “The Mystic Brains”, in which large number of students and staff members participated.
The lecture was delivered by Dr Parveen Lehna from Post Graduate Department of Physics and Electronics, University of Jammu.
Principal Dr Satinder Singh highlighted the need of bonding between research and its assimilation in society and utilization as economically viable end products.
Dr Lehna gave an interesting account about the functioning and misconception about its processing power.
The lecture was organized by College Science Club comprising of Dr BD Sehgal, convener, Dr Sandhya Sankhyadhar, Prof Jeet Kour, Dr Sanjay Karlopia, Dr Raman Gupta, Prof Sujata Kundan and Dr Balwinder Kour.
At the end, Dr Sandhya Sankhyadhar presented vote of thanks.
GDC Billawar celebrated National Science Day. On the occasion, a science quiz was organized wherein 7 teams comprising of 21 students participated. First prize was bagged by team D comprising Himmat, Rajat and Ankit, whereas second and thirs positions were claimed by team A and B led by Manika and Priyanka respectively. Dr Vikas Gupta, SDM Billawar, was the chief guest while Prof BL Gupta, Principal presided over the function.
National Science Day was celebrated in KV No. 2, Jammu cantt.
Many children spokes on the importance of science in everyday life, Raman effect and life and work of Sir CV Raman.
On the occasion, Manik and group of class XI, whose project was selected for National Level Science Congress was awarded by Principal M Laxmi Narayan. He also announced the names of two teachers namely Rachna Sharma, PGT, Chemistry and Nimmi Bhat, PRT, who were selected for the award of Best Science Teacher by KVS (JR).
