Afzal Guru issue rocks Assembly, House adjourned

JAMMU :  Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was adjourned today as issue of handing over body of Parliament Attack convict Afzal Guru to his family rocked the House on second consecutive day of the Budget session here.
Speaker Mubarak Gul adjourned the House for 30 minutes as mainstream opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) created uproar and demanded discussion on handing of Guru’s body to his family.
PDP wanted to move adjournment motion to suspend routine business and discuss the issue.
Leader of the Opposition Mehbooba Mufti said Guru’s body should be handed over to his family so that they can ritually perform his last rites.
Carrying posters, PDP legislators raised slogans and protested in the House seeking discussion.
The issue is not related to the state, the Speaker said, adding that “Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PDP Chief patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had already written a letter to the Prime Minister in this context.”
CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami and five National Conference MLAs have also moved adjournment motion on this issue.
Mr Tarigami and independent MLA Hakeem Yaseen also supported the issue in the House and advocated for discussion.
As PDP continued protesting and shouting in the House, Mr Gul adjourned the House for 30 minutes.
