All 5 sailors released; in safe custody: Govt

NEW DELHI, Jun 29: Five Indian sailors, who have been kidnapped from a Nigeria ship, were released, the Government announced on Saturday.

All the sailors are in safe custody, Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh Mandviya said.

On April 19, the five sailors identified as Sudeep Chaudhary, Ankit Hooda, Chirag Yadav, Avinash Reddy and Moogu Ravi had been kidnapped from vessel MT Apecus and taken to Bonny Island in Nigeria.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan thanked External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Mr Mandviya for their release.

He tweeted, “Thank you S Jaishankar, Mansukh Mandaviya and all the stakeholders for their efforts in securing the release of 5 Indian seafarers including that of Sudeep Chowdhary from Odisha who was amongst our citizens kidnapped by pirates in Nigeria.”

The father of Sudeep had contacted Mr Pradhan and sought his intervention in the matter. (UNI)
