JAMMU, Mar 2: Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, called on N. N. Vohra, Governor, at Raj Bhavan, here last evening.
The Governor, who is Chancellor of the Kashmir University, discussed the functioning of the University with Prof. Talat Ahmad, particularly issues relating to the recruitment in the past years of non-academic staff without satisfying codal requirements and matters relating to the functioning of the off-site Campuses.
The Vice Chancellor also briefed the Governor about the to-date status of various ongoing research projects undertaken by the University and those in the pipeline. The Governor was very happy to learn that consequent to certain initiatives taken by the VC a number of students have won prestigious awards and scholarships for higher studies and research.
A delegation of the Shia Federation Jammu Province, also called on Mr. Vohra and presented to him a memorandum of their demands.
The 11-member delegation led by Ashiq Hussain Khan, President of the Federation, discussed with the Governor the issues relating to the socio-economic development of the community.
The demands presented by the delegation included constituting an Advisory Board for the development of Shia Community in the State, representation to the Shia community of Jammu region in the State Legislative Council, employment package for youth of the community, opening of handicraft training centres and augmenting healthcare facilities in the areas having Shia population, particularly in Poonch district.
The Governor heard the deputationists patiently and assured that their demands would be taken up with the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, deputation of the Jammu and Kashmir Women Society, called on Mr. Vohra.
The deputation led by Nirmal Padha, President, J&K Women Society, presented to the Governor a copy of the resolution which was passed at a State level seminar on “Violence Against Women” organized by the Society at Jammu in September 2012. She briefed the Governor about the proceedings of the seminar.
Mrs. Padha also briefed the Governor about the various activities undertaken by the Society, including organizing of literacy campaigns, healthcare services and supplementing the governmental efforts for promoting empowerment of women and, besides its future roadmap.
Interacting with the deputation, the Governor emphasized the need for availing maximum benefits from the various Central and State Schemes being implemented for the advancement of women in varied spheres of human endeavour to promote their empowerment. He suggested to the delegation to enlarge the orbit of activities of their organization and observed that possibilities would be explored to support their initiatives aimed at promoting the welfare of women, particularly those in distress.
