Anantnag, July 21: Scores of locals today resorted to vandalism and manhandled hospital staff at Mother & Child Hospital Anantnag for alleged negligence which led to the death of a woman who had undergone cesarean at the hospital five days ago.
A pregnant lady was admitted to the hospital on July 17, who then underwent cesarean and gave birth to an infant. However, soon after the surgery, the lady developed some complication which subsequently led to her death while she was being referred to Lal Ded Hospital Srinagar.
The relatives of the lady alleged that she was made to wait for hours, while as doctors demanded money before conducting the surgery. They demanded stern punishment for those who are allegedly responsible for her death.
“She was made to wait for hours before they could operate on her; moreover, they demanded money from us before starting treatment,” said a relative of the deceased lady.
The protestors said that they want the accused doctors to be booked and exemplary punishment be given to them. “We will not go from here until the accused are not arrested,” they said. The out of control, protestors later resorted to vandalism, and manhandled the hospital staff including lady doctors.
Medical Superintendent, M&CH Anantnag Dr M Y Zagoo told Excelsior they have ordered an inquiry into the matter. He also said that the protestors resorted to vandalism and tore clothes of the hospital staff.
“After her death, the relatives came to the hospital and said that it was the fate that she couldn’t survive, I fail what prompted them to protest after 5 days,” he said, adding that the doctors at the hospital had managed her well. “But after the surgery, her blood pressure could not be stabilized, following which we referred her to Srinagar but she passed away on the way,” he said.
Police later pacified the protestors after the assurance by the hospital authorities that they will conduct a probe into the matter.
