Srinagar-Leh power line

Sir,
The people of Ladakh division have something to cheer about. The Finance Minister P Chadambaram has approved construction of a power transmission line between Srinagar and Leh with an investment of Rs 1840 crore. The 220 KV line to be implemented by Power Grid Corporation of India will provide electricity to Drass, Kargil and Khaltsi besides Leh town.
Though the project had been given a green signal some years back, it could not take off due to financial constraints. Now, when the funds have been approved for the project, there is no excuse left with the concerned authorities to delay it further. The concerned department should take this project on a far-footing basis and enable the people in this region to take advantage of electricity.
Presently people here have to depend on diesel generator sets which provide electricity for a short duration of four hours during evening. Besides being a source of pollution-air and noise, these sets are not economically viable. In absence of a reliable power supply, the whole of region has remained industrially backward.
The Srinagar-Leh 220 KV line, it is expected will go a long way in improving the power situation in the Valley.
Yours etc….
