SRINAGAR, Aug 1: National Conference senior leader and former Minister Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan today said that the move of upgrading the District Hospital Handwara to Medical College will give impetus to the development of backward Kupwara district in the State.
“It has been a long pending demand of the people of Handwara to have a Medical College in the area. Now that the demand has been addressed, people of Handwara are thankful to the Governor administration and the Medical Council of India for conceding to the demand,” he said.
Accusing PDP-BJP-PC combine for undue delay in upgrading the District Hospital to Medical College said, Ramzan pointed out that the Medical Council of India had already approved five Medical Colleges for the State and the 200 bedded hospital of the Handwara town also qualified as per the 1999 MCI norms. “However the decision was stalled by the regime of PDP-BJP-PC combine,”he alleged and adding that without further delay, the district Revenue authorities should now identify land for the establishment of medical college.
Choudhary, who has formerly represented the Handwara constituency, said the district hospitals was established in 1980’s and catered to the adjoining arduous areas. “The youth of Handwara and Kupwara are no less intelligent than their counterparts in the other areas of the State and the country. However the absence of opportunities is what mars their future ambitions. I am sure that the move will open new vistas of opportunity for the local youth. The move will give impetus to the education and research sector in the Kupwara region,” he added.
Choudhary also urged the incumbent Governor administration to come up with a college in the area specially dedicated to girls. “The boy’s college in the Handawara is already facing saturation. The number of students enrolled there exceeds 6000, and as such the students in particular the girls find it very difficult to get enrolled there. As far the population is concerned, a single boy’s Degree College is not able to cater to the demands of the whole district,” he explained.
