NEW DELHI: Elders in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday stressed the need to develop a proper set up for the redressal of consumers’ grievances and pitched for a wider publicity campaign to make them aware.
Congress Member KC Ramalingam, while participating in the debate on the Consumer Protection Bill 2019, spoke about unfair trade practice as defined by the Bill and the punitive measures prescribed.
He also said the Government should protect the interests of the consumers.
“There is need to synergize the interest of consumers and the manufacturing companies.The adulteration in food products has been reported widely in these days and strong and stringent laws are needed to to prevent these practices”, Mr Ramalingam said.
The Government must act against companies which make false or misleading advertisements to sell their products, he added.
On the spurt in e-commerce, Mr Ramalingam said the market of e-commerce is spreading in India and many consumers are shopping through this platform but the Bill is silent on e-commerce and this should also be incorporated in the legislation. (agencies)
