Union Minister Tomar could be new man to watch in Madhya Pradesh politics

NEW DELHI: In the midst of political turmoil in Madhya Pradesh Congress and even as Akali Dal has mounted pressure on incumbent Chief Minister Kamal Nath on 1984 carnage, a section in the BJP is toying with the idea of bringing a major change in the saffron camp leadership.
“I will not say we will do exactly that; but Narendra Singh Tomar is an important leader from Madhya Pradesh and tomorrow we want to have a new face in the state, it can be Mr Tomar,” a key party leader said here on the condition of anonymity.
The remarks came in the context of reported efforts being made by the BJP leaders in the state to topple Kamal Nath as the Chief Minister.
“Yes, we may enact the ‘Karnataka episode’ in Madhya Pradesh too, but I cannot fix the timeline,” the source said – albeit – in a lighter vein.
The reference was obviously to BJP’s shenanigans in Karnataka wherein JD(S)-Congress was toppled and the state now has a new Chief Minister in senior saffron party leader B S Yediyurappa.
The remarks especially about Mr Tomar have much political implication as a section of BJP leaders are not in favour of making Shivraj Singh Chouhan again the Chief Minister of the central Indian state.
Mr Chouhan was in the coveted office in Bhopal from November 2005 till December 2018 when his party was voted out of power in the fiercely contested polls.
The names of various BJP leaders such as Kailash Vijayvargiya are also doing the round for the leadership role in the central Indian state.
The Congress government has a thin majority in the assembly with the support of one SP and four independent MLAs.
It may be mentioned that Shivraj Singh Chouhan though has been made BJP’s national vice president, he has more than once used the phrase ‘Tiger abhi zindaa hai’ (the tiger is still alive) in reference to his desire not to stay away from Madhya Pradesh politics.
The BJP leaders often indicate that Mr Vijayvargiya could be ‘rewarded’ for his successful leadership in managing big victories for the saffron party in West Bengal and Haryana.
This, however, does not necessarily mean comeback in Madhya Pradesh politics as Mr Vijayvargiya could also be given bigger role in the party or in the central government.
