JAMMU, Sept 19: State unit of Janta Dal Secular has demanded that the SKUAST Jammu be renamed as Maharaja Hari Singh University of Agriculture Science and Technology.
In a statement, JD(S) Acting President for J&K, said that there was no justification for naming two similar universities in a State after the one person. He recalled that the Agriculture University for Jammu was announced by then Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda but the then National Conference Government in J&K had named it as Sher-e-Kashmir University despite stiff opposition of the said naming by late Dhanraj Bargotra in the Legislative Council.
“Now all the Legislative powers rest with the Governor and hence the name can be changed by the Governor by using his powers,” he said and suggested that September 23, the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh, is the most appropriate occasion for renaming SKUAST Jammu as Maharaja Hari Singh Agriculture University.
