Birth anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh celebrated

JAMMU, Oct 21: The birth anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh was celebrated today with pomp and show by several organizations, NGOs and political parties in Jammu as well as in National capital, New Delhi.
National Panthers Party organized a grand celebration on the birthday of Maharaja Gulab Singh at the headquarters of the Panthers Party in New Delhi. Several political and social activists paid tributes to Maharaja Gulab Singh who founded the state of J&K in 1846 after signing the Treaty of Amritsar with the East India Company.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Bhim Singh expressed surprise on the mentioning of Maharaja Gulab Singh religion as Sikh in Wikipedia. “This is mistaken/wrong interpretation because Maharaja Gulab Singh belonged to Rajput/Kshatriya dynasty of the Dogras,” he asserted.
The organizers in a resolution passed in New Delhi today demanded President of India to issue an ordinance restoring the statehood status of J&K (except Ladakh).
Nationalist Student Congress (NSC), the student wing of NCP paid rich tributes to first Dogra ruler Maharaja Gulab Singh on his 227th birth anniversary at Amar Mahal, Jammu. Rishi Kaul Kilam, National executive council member NSC joined the prayer meeting and paid rich tributes to the pious soul. TK Kaul, senior NCP vice president, RS Billoweria chairman youth wing of NCP, Mashqur Bhat, vice president NSC and Bharat Kumar general secretary NCP, also paid tributes to the 1st Dogra ruler.
Yuva Rajput Sabah (YRS) celebrated the birth anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh in a simple function during which YRS activists led by Surinder Singh Gilli (president YRS) paid floral tributes to the Maharaja. Speaking on the occasion, Gilli expressed resentment over Government decision to split the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. He said the positions of Dogras who are the founder of the State and sacrificed their life to create this state have not been given due respect and regard by the Central Government.
Dogra Degree College Bassi Kalan, Bari Brahmana, Jammu organized a function to commemorate the birth anniversary of the founder of the erstwhile state of J&K. The celebrations began with paying of floral tribute to Maharaja Gulab Singh by all the staff and the students of Dogra group of Colleges in the college auditorium. The Portrait of Maharaja was garlanded by the chief guest. A guest lecture on the topic “Contribution of Maharaja Gulab Singh in formation of J&K” by Dr Jigar Mohd, Prof and Dean, Research Studies Centre, University of Jammu was organized. Prominent among those present on the occasion were Samar Dev Singh Charak, Secretary, Dogra Educational Trust and Col Kamal Padha, Director of the Trust.
