UDHAMPUR/ SRINAGAR/JAMMU, Oct 28: Indian Army celebrated Infantry Day and paid tributes to the war heroes/martyrs to mark the day across the region today.
The 73rd Infantry day was celebrated with traditional wreath laying ceremony at the Dhruva Shahid Samarak, Udhampur by Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh, GOC-in-C, Northern Command. He complimented all ranks of Infantry for their devotion to duty and indomitable spirit while working under trying and challenging conditions.
He commended their contribution in maintaining the sanctity of the nation’s borders and fighting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. He also lauded the role of Infantry in ensuring security of the populace of J&K.
The Infantry Day is celebrated to commemorate the operations launched by the Indian Army on October 27, 1947 to thwart the Pakistani aggression on Jammu and Kashmir State. On this solemn day, the supreme sacrifices made by the Indian Army in defending the honour and integrity of the nation were remembered by all.
The 73rd ‘Infantry Day’ was also celebrated by the ‘Fire & Fury’ Corps at Leh today with traditional solemnity and reverence.
Lt Gen Harinder Singh, General Officer Commanding of the Corps laid a wreath at the War Memorial in Leh and paid homage to all the brave heroes, who have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. A large number of serving and retired military personnel attended the ceremony.
Indian Army celebrates October 27 every year as the ‘Infantry Day’, as it was on this day that 1st Battalion of the SIKH Regiment landed at Srinagar airbase and displayed resoluteness and extraordinary courage to thwart the evil designs of the Pakistan Army, who had invaded Kashmir with the help of tribal raiders. The bold and gallant actions carried out by the Indian Infantry battalions ensured that the nefarious designs of Pakistan Army were forcefully defeated.
In the Ladakh Sector, Infantry battalions of the Indian Army have been part of every war fought in the Sector, bringing laurels to the Army and to the Nation. The saga of courage and sacrifice displayed during the battle of Rezang La in 1962 and more recently during Operation Vijay in the Kargil Sector are testimonies to the spirit of sacrifice of the Indian Infantry soldier. Of the 21 Param Vir Chakras awarded till date, seven PVCs were awarded to officers and men who fought in the Ladakh Sector, including three posthumous awards.

Infantry Day was also celebrated by Nagrota based White Knight Corps and Srinagar based Chinar Corps today. The GOCs and other ranks paid floral tributes to the war heroes/ martyrs to mark the day.
To honor the supreme sacrifice of the Infantry in fighting the Pakistani raiders in Jammu and Kashmir in 1947, Tiger Division celebrated its Infantry Day with traditional solemnity.
Maj Gen Sharad Kapur, GOC ‘Tiger Division’, laid wreath at the ‘War Memorial’ in Satwari Cantt. Serving officers and all ranks of Tiger Divisions as well as veterans attended the Ceremony.
At Qila Darhal in Nowshera sector the Army, civil administration and social activists paid rich tributes to the martyrs of 1947 to till now in an impressive function at Shaheedgarh today. A religious function was held at local Gurudwara on Sunday where ` Akhand Path’ / recitation of shabd Kirtan was organised. A community lunch was also organized. ADC Sukhdev Singh and ASP Nowshera, GL Sharma also attended the programme.
