One could hardly imagine that a time might come when the mighty Pir Panchal Range could be penetrated not 11.3 km long tunnel would be dug across this high inhospitable Himalayan Range that separates valley of Kashmir from Jammu region.
This is really a merval of modern science and technology. The tunnel links Banihal town with Qazigund through a train line.
Keeping in view the hazardous terrain, the entire tunnel is a living example of the engineering excellence of the highest degree. All the workers including engineers and technicians who zealously worked to complete the tunnel deserve nation’s gratitude.
The most noteworthy feature about this rail tunnel is that the engineers and planners have taken into consideration almost all safety measures to ensure safe passage through the tunnel.
Its immediate impact will be on Kashmir Valley. The problem of road blockade due to inclement weather condition will end for ever. There will be free flow of traffic between Srinagar not rest of India even in winter. A golden era of economic development of Kashmir valley has dawned with the inauguration of the tunnel.
