JAMMU, Mar 15: Government is contemplating to seek amendment in Consumer Protection Act after consultation with various stakeholders to ensure protection of interests of consumers and time bound disposal of the complaints against trade malpractices.
This was stated by the Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Ch. Muhammad Ramzan at a function organized to mark the World Consumer Day at Mahant Bachittar Singh College of Engineering and Technology organized by Consumers Welfare Association- a local Non- Government Organisation (NGO).
The Minister said that stringent laws and enforcement is important along with an informed citizenry to ensure that the consumer rights are respected and protected. He said that efforts are being made to streamline the functioning of CA&PD and to ensure that the laws are implemented in letter and spirit.
Ch. Ramzan called for strengthening the enforcement wings of the concerned departments to check the unscrupulous trade practices and safeguard the consumer interests. He said that Government’s initiative to ensure home delivery of LPG is an important step to guard interests of the consumer and improve the services extended to them. The Minister said that the oil companies have been asked to strictly adhere to the timeline set for the purpose .
He directed the concerned officers to check over charging, if any, at airport, hotels and restaurants. He said strict action will be taken under law against the erring traders.
Mr Ramzan also lauded the management of the Sant Manjit Singh Trust for their contributions in the field of medical and technical education and congratulated them for their initiative for opening a Medical Institute and Research Centre and hoped that it would contribute a lot in providing high end health services and medical education in State.
Earlier, the President Consumer Welfare Association Vikram Gour spoke on the historical background and importance of the day. He said that students are important stakeholders who can spread awareness about the consumer rights.
Principal of the College S.K.Badyal also spoke on the importance of the day and role of students in generating awareness about the issue.
