SRINAGAR, May 12: A high level meeting of Transport Officers was held under the chairmanship of the Principal Secretary Transport, Sudhanshu Panday here today.
The meeting was attended by Transport Commissioner, Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo, Joint Transport Commissioner, Joint Director Planning, Regional Transport Officers of Kashmir and Jammu and Assistant Regional Transport Officers of the Valley.
The meeting discussed various issues regarding how to overcome the bottlenecks in the smooth functioning of the department including computerization of Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) and providing hassle free transport facilities to the commuters in the city.
Earlier, the Transport Commissioner gave a detailed PowerPoint presentation about computerization of MVD (comprehensive e-Governance Computer solution for Transport Sector in the State), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme launched during the 2004-05.
The project was implemented initially in two phases covering erstwhile 14 districts within a project cost of Rs.129 lakhs. The newly created districts under phase 3rd have been taken up with a project cost of Rs. 156.16 lakhs, which is under progress.
The Principle Secretary urged the concerned officers to ensure that the implementation of road safety measures and the traffic rules are strictly followed by the transporters so that the common people may not suffer due to traffic jams.
In order to improve the road safety, the Principle Secretary stressed upon the computerization of MVD within the stipulated time frame. He directed both the RTOs to complete the digitization of data relating to computerization of driving licenses both commercial and non commercial by June 30, 2012.
It was also decided that the replacement of the hardware of the district Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur, Rajouri, Budgam, Baramulla and Leh and the offices of the RTOs of Jammu/Kashmir taken up in the 1st phase will be considered after the proposals from RTO/ Transport Commissioner/NIC are prepared, so that funding is accordingly arranged.
The Principle Secretary urged the State Informatics Officer (NIC) to coordinate fully with the office of the Transport Commissioner, so that the project is completed and all the RTO and ARTO offices are fully computerized and operationalised by ending June this year.
