Budgam people protest against non-availability of power

SRINAGAR, Mar 17: Thousands of residents of dozens of villages in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district today voiced their strong protest against the non-availability of the electricity in their areas for the past 10 days.
A delegation of the residents of Khag village and the adjoining villages told Excelsior that the electricity to these villages has been snapped on March 8 and since then the areas are reeling under darkness. They said the power supply has been snapped on the pretext that the people are not paying the revised electricity tariff to the Power Development Department.
“We are not against the hike in the electricity charges but that does not mean that the department will take the harsh step and snap the power supply. There are other ways of getting things done but unfortunately the PDD has gone to the extreme thus forcing the people to pass the days of winter without electricity,” said the residents.
The residents while quoting the Executive Engineer, PDD Budgam said that the orders to snap the supply have been issued by the office of Chief Engineer, PDD Kashmir. They appealed the Minister of State (MoS) for Power, Vikar Rasool to intervene and issue orders for restoration of power supply to the affected villages.
