Pollution Control Board in ‘action mode’

To put a brake on the practice of dumping of solid waste haphazardly and in an entirely unscientific and unwarranted way and consequently polluting environment , Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Board has swung into action by taking to ‘task’ Municipal Council Udhampur by imposing a penalty. It has , therefore, to pay a compensation of Rs.1.39 crore as a cost of violating environment. This has obviously been done in pursuance of “polluter pays principle” and such penal actions against more identified defaulters should be the wider dimensions of measures taken to protect environment in Jammu and Kashmir.
Due compliance of the set norms of National Green Tribunal (NGT) in this respect in the right earnest by almost all institutions including government departments , hospitals , nursing homes, marriage and banquet halls, Urban Local Bodies and the like , should be ensured lest the situation could slip down to unmanageable dimensions. Not only the environment ipso -facto – but rivers, nullahs, water bodies, canals etc too are becoming easy dumping grounds for waste material , effluents and even the ultimate culmination of the discharge from drains and gutters. We often find such material dumped quite haphazardly on hill slopes along National Highways and even at available spaces in the city itself emanating foul smell . Let breathing fresh air be not turned into a luxury destined to be entitled only to the lucky ones living at places not stung by such violation of the environment but as a matter of natural right by all citizens for which stringent actions need to be taken regularly.
A wide publicity and awareness about the ‘manners and norms’ of treating waste material which is generated in hundreds of tons from localities on daily basis, should become an integral part of the ‘save environment mission’ .At the same time, more dumping sites with facilities of treating the waste material on modern and scientific ways need to be set up to avoid recurring incidents of illegally dumping of such material.
