JAMMU, Mar 18: J&K Panchayati Raj Movement (JKPRM), a Valley based association of Sarpanchs and Panchs has said that the Government should hold consultations with the various representative bodies of Sarpanchs and Panchs of State before making any amendment in the existing J&K Panchayati Raj Act (JKPRA). For this the Govt must constitute a committee, it asserted.
In a statement issued here, the convener of the Association, Shahnawaz Sultan said that they certainly want amendments to be made in the existing State Panchayati Raj Act so that the provisions under 73rd Amendment may be incorporated in this but the Government is keeping the Panchayat representatives in total dark about the draft bill.
If Government can seek public opinion for the new police Act or the RTI Act passed in 2009, then why is it hesitating to hold discussions with us on State Panchayati Raj Act, Shahnawaz said.
He further said that JKPRM fully supported the hunger strike call given by Shafiq Mir, convener of JK Panchayat Conference, in this concern.
