SRINAGAR, Mar 20: As a fresh western disturbance is approaching the State by the end of this week, people of the Kashmir valley are all braced up to face inclement weather on this weekend.
The Meteorological (MeT) Department has forecast that a western disturbance would hit Jammu and Kashmir on March 24. The department said that due to the impact of this western disturbance the weather system would be disrupted across the State with the Kashmir bearing the brunt.
“As the western disturbance is likely to hit the Kashmir valley on March 24 it is quite possible that we might have light/moderate rains in the plains while as the higher reaches and the mountainous regions of the Kashmir valley might receive light snowfall. The impact would feather away in a day or two and then the weather would be normal,” said an official of MeT Department.
Meanwhile, chill returned to the Kashmir valley as the sky remained overcast with clouds during the entire course of the day. Late in the evening the Srinagar city was lashed by rains while as reports reaching here said the rainfall was recorded in the higher reaches of the Kashmir valley especially in the Pir Panjal range.
Due to cloud cover and overcast conditions the day temperature in the Srinagar city, summer capital of the State came down by three degrees with the mercury settling down at 17.9 degrees Celsius while as the night temperature was recorded as 9.5 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday Srinagar recorded the day temperature of 20.9 degrees Celsius while as the night temperature was recorded as 5.2 degrees Celsius (4.3 degrees less than today’s night temperature of 9.5 degrees Celsius).
Jammu, the winter capital of the State recorded the day temperature of 27.3 degrees Celsius while as the night temperature was recorded as 16.2 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam in South Kashmir recorded the day temperature of 17.0 degrees Celsius while as the night temperature was recorded as 3.0 degrees Celsius. Kupwara in North Kashmir recorded the day temperature of 17.1 degrees Celsius with the minimum temperature being recorded as 6.6 degrees Celsius.
Kargil, in Ladakh region recorded the day temperature of 13.0 degrees Celsius while as the night temperature at this place was recorded as 0.8 degrees Celsius. Leh, also in Ladakh region recorded the day temperature of 15.0 degrees Celsius with the minimum temperature being recorded as 0.0 degrees Celsius.
In the meantime the MeT Department has forecast that light rain/thundershowers would occur at a few places over the State in the next 24 hours. The department has however, ruled out any significant change in the weather over the next 48 hours saying that the weather would be mainly dry in the next two days.
