Even after seven years of its approval to set up two bio-medical waste treatment plants one each at Srinagar and Jammu, continues to be in the spin of officialdom lethargy and indecisiveness. Land is still not identified for these two plants curiously at neither of the twin capital city which clearly means that actual exercise has not still started reflecting quite indifference to such an important issue from the concerned authorities. It is despite the fact that the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare during the financial year 2013-14 had cleared a proposal for both the cities and even released the funds. What else was needed excepting to proceed ahead in the matter by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir.
Since there being a persistent rise in generation of this material from various hospitals and health institutions , those private agencies presently engaged in treatment thereof cannot cope up with the quantum of generation and there being no such facility in the Government sector warrants an immediate decision in this respect. Perhaps Pollution Control Board is reported to be delaying the issuance of an NOC but the question is whether and where land is identified. An early action is solicited in the matter as seven long years means a lot at other places across the country and should mean so in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir too.
