JAMMU, Dec 22: Mahajan Sabha Gandhi Nagar today celebrated the 130th birthday of late Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan with solemnity and fervor.
At a simple function held at the Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan Park, Gandhi Nagar, his laudable services as the Prime Minister of J&K in facilitating the accession of the princely State with India and then as the third Chief Justice of India were recalled by the speakers.
Jugal Mahajan, Chief Patron of Mahajan Sabha said that it was he who as a member of the Radcliffe Boundary Commission (for Punjab) ensured road connectivity to Jammu through Gurdaspur without which accession of the State with India could not had been possible. Later as PM of J&K, he was instrumental in getting the State’s accession with India, Mahajan added.
Yash Pal Gupta, President All Jammu Retailer Association said that when Justice Mahajan retired as CJI, there was no pendency of cases in his court. He said his role as social reformer within the community and outside would always be remembered.
The function started with havan followed by floral tributes to Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan by a large number of prominent persons. The Statue of Justice Mahajan was also garlanded.
On the occasion, more than fifty destitute women and other poor persons were given woolen blankets.
Among those present included Jagdish Vaid, President, Mahajan Sabha Gandhi Nagar, Bhanu Gupta, Corporator of JMC, Er P C Gupta, General Secretary Mahajan Sabha Gandhi Nagar, NK Gupta, Chief Organiser, Dr RK Gupta, Ravi Rohmetra, Raghubhir Chand Gupta, Raman Gupta, Sham Lal Gupta and KB Jandial.
