Kissan Union demands relief package, lists other demands

KALAKOTE, May 13: All Jammu and Kashmir Kissan Union (AJKKU) urged for Rs 500 crore relief package for draught hit seven lakh families of farmers.
Addressing the gathering during a dharna, Chairman of the union, Ashok Kumar, also demanded separate budget for agriculture on the pattern of railway budget for making this sector remunerative for the farmers.
He pleaded for formulation of comprehensive policy for the State, so that the losses caused to standing crops, orchards and live stock due to drought, excessive rains, floods, hail storm and various diseases could be offset by providing them full compensation for such losses.
He also demanded free ration for six months to all the affected farmers in Jammu besides free seed, fertilizer and other agriculture inputs for the Kharief 2012.
All J&K Kissan Union vice president MS Jamwal, general secretaries Yash Paul Sharma and Dr YP Sharma and secretary Istkar Ali, while addressing the farmers impressed upon the Union and State Government to concede their demands and also pleaded for crop and cattle insurance on Government expenses.
They also highlighted other demands including augmenting irrigation facilities, promoting rain water harvesting management, providing latest techniques of dry land farming, bringing small and marginal farmers under BPL category and reservation of seats for the children in professional, technical and institutions of higher learning as per the population of farming community, besides many other demands.
Among others present were Vinod Sharma, Hans Raj, MY Mugal, Noor Hussain, Rattan Lal Padha, Ram Parkash Sharma, Kashmir Singh, Jamit Singh, Dr Hazuri Lal, Ram Lal, etc.
