JAMMU, Mar 21: Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services and Sports, Taj Mohi-ud-Din today said that the Government is strengthening the infrastructure at the two medical colleges of Srinagar and Jammu to increase the number of seats at undergraduate level. He said this while inaugurating the Mammography and Colour Doppler section at the GMC here today.
The Minister said the Government is giving a relook at the infrastructure at the two medical colleges as it is a pre requisite for increasing the number of seats. He said the Government would approach the Medical Council of India for giving its nod to increase intake capacity of students. But, he said, before that necessary infrastructure up gradation would be made at these two colleges as mandated by MCI norms.
Mr Taj said the need of increasing the number of seats has risen due to a huge demand of doctors in the State and also due to the fact no such increase in intake capacity has taken place in recent past.
The Minister said many big steps have been taken to improve the condition of the hospitals and hoped that soon the services, cleanliness and management at these would match those of the excellent hospitals of the country. He said cleaning process of the GMC, Jammu hospital is being mechanised and the machines with the cleaning capacity of 3000 sq ft per hour would be put in place within few days.
He said the management of toilets in the hospitals has been outsourced for proper management and upkeep.
Later, interacting with the faculty and Doctors Association, Mr Taj said he has streamlined the process of engagement of Registrars and is hopeful that the shortage of staff would be soon overcome.
