Cong Sammelan at Srinagar on May 19

JAMMU, May 13: As a sequel to directions of All India Congress Committee (AICC) president, Sonia Gandhi, the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) has set in motion an exercise to strengthen unity and discipline in the party rank and file and in this regard a Sammelan is being organized at summer capital of the State on May 19.
The decision to organize Sammelan at Srinagar has been taken by Congress Incharge for J&K, Mohan Prakash, keeping in view of the latest directives of Sonia Gandhi that partymen in all the States across the country must shed all manner of factional behaviour and fight as one disciplined team at all levels.
The directives of AICC president and subsequent decision of Mohan Prakash to hold Sammelan assume significance for Jammu and Kashmir like several other States of the country as J&K Pradesh Congress Committee is all set to be refurbished.
Mr Prakash told EXCELSIOR that he has directed the PCC to hold a Sammelan at Srinagar in which all the PCC members, district presidents, AICC delegates, legislators, Ministers and Members of Parliament from all the three regions of the State would participate.
“The Sammelan would be a first step to take the message of the AICC president to each and every worker of the party and strengthen unity and discipline among the party rank and file”, said Mr Prakash, who is also going to participate in the Sammelan.
In response to a question, he said, “there will be number of party activities in all the three regions of the State in general and Jammu region in particular in order to reach out the party cadre and listen to their grievances”, adding “in this way we would be able to bridge the gap, if any, between the party leaders and workers, which is imperative to further strengthen the party base”.
When asked about Congress’ share of two ministerial berths in the Coalition Government and performance of party’s Ministers, he said, “we are seized of all the issues… we have taken note of all this and decision would be taken very shortly”.
It is pertinent to mention here that Roads and Buildings and School Education portfolios, which were earlier with the Congress, are presently being held by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah. The R&B Ministry went to National Conference’s kitty after the Congress party compelled MLA from Inderwal, G M Saroori, to resign from the Council of Ministers over alleged fraud in the MBBS exams involving the daughter of Mr Saroori.
Similarly, School Education portfolio was snatched from Peerzada Mohd Sayeed after his involvement in the BOSE examination fraud surfaced last year.
About reports that Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz would be made Pradesh Congress Committee president for another term, Mr Prakash said, “I don’t want to comment on this”.
However, sources said that Sammelan would pass a resolution authorizing AICC president Sonia Gandhi for formation of new Pradesh Congress Committee and also about inclusion of new faces in the Council of Ministers.
“Prof Soz is likely to be given another term”, sources added while disclosing that Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, would have a major role in the constitution of new Pradesh Congress Committee.
